Berry Season is Here !

Summer is just around the corner and we know what that means…berry season is here! There is nothing better than getting fresh berries from the market to add a bit of sweetness to any meal or snack-time. Although we are only in early March, we have had such a mild winter that strawberry fields are popping up everywhere. Today we were at Costco and I came across a package of strawberries that just looked too good to pass up. Now the difficult decision…am I going to buy them because they look amazing and we’re at Costco, so it is a great price, or do I spend more at the grocery store to get a smaller package that probably won’t spoil before they are all eaten? With confidence I bought the larger package at Costco because earlier this week, on my new favorite “addiction” site Pinterest, there was a “pin” about how to keep berries fresh for weeks.
You’ll want to mix one part vinegar (I used white vinegar, but you can also use apple cider vinegar) with 10 parts water. Soak the berries in this mixture making sure that berry is completely covered, drain in colander and rinse if you want (not necessary). Let the berries dry slightly and refrigerate. The vinegar will help kill the bacteria and mold spores that are on the surface of the berries which would normally cause them to spoil in a matter of days. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, etc, will last at least a week or more which will not only save our pocketbooks, but will allow us to enjoy these sweet wonders much longer. Now get out and enjoy that wonderful weather and don’t be afraid to buy those mouthwatering strawberries 🙂
